The pandemic has increased the need for smart packaging measures
The scale of the coronavirus crisis will continue to reshape society in many ways, reorienting our relationship to government, to each other, and to the outside world. In our efforts to contain further transmission of the virus through social distancing, we have witnessed positive environmental impacts. From crystal clear waters in the canals of Venice to dramatic falls in pollution levels in major cities, the COVID-19 pandemic made us realize the damaging environmental and health consequences of the status quo.
Unfortunately, despite seeing some clearer skies, the extent of plastic pollution on the Earth continues at alarming levels. The global response to COVID-19 has created mountains of additional waste through the increased consumption of single-use plastic cups and pre-packaged foods, not to mention the quadrupled amounts of medical waste. Single-use plastics come with an environmental cost that can no longer be ignored. Packsize founder and CEO Hanko Kiessner recognizes this renewed focus on smart packaging and the need to establish lasting, sustainable behavior.
“Most packaging processes used today are unsustainable,” said Kiessner in a recently released Packsize video on the immediate importance of sustainability practices. “We have alternatives available; we just need to start using them.”
Kiessner grew up in a small town in northwestern Germany. At an early age, he knew he wanted to emigrate to the United States and start a business that made a difference in the world. With family roots in the packaging industry, Kiessner founded Packsize in 2002. He sought to achieve sustainable operations early on and continues to be a strong advocate for the reduction, re-use, and recycling of packaging materials while placing great importance on building sustainability into every aspect of his company’s operations.
“Now is the time to do what is right, to stop mistreating the planet with plastics and pollution,” said Kiessner. “We have the opportunity to save 98 million trees each year and 17 billion kilograms of pollution from shipping—creating a healthier planet.”
Packsize provides its customers with the most advanced, eco-friendly packaging automation in the industry, utilizing flat stacked z-Fold®, made from responsibly managed and renewable resources. Right-sized packaging requires less corrugated fiberboard, removes or reduces the need for void filler, and reduces the overall carbon footprint.
With online shopping behaviors changing during the COVID-19 crisis, more industries are forced online and many existing retailers are being pushed to their limits. The overall volume of products shipped is rising and customers are demanding higher quality packaging with less waste. Now is the time for businesses to rethink their packaging processes to adapt to these changes that may endure beyond the pandemic.
With an ongoing commitment to Smart Packaging for a Healthy Planet®, Packsize understands the impact sustainable packaging practices have on the environment, communities, and continued business success. Not only does Right-sized Packaging On Demand® reduce the “footprint” of the packaging supply chain, but also results in more warehouse space, improved profitability, and the reciprocal benefit of increased customer satisfaction.
