Let’s be real for a moment here—is there anything more bland than a brown cardboard box? You might feel some excitement when you see one on your doorstep, but that’s often because you have no idea what’s inside it. It could be socks from a friend, a cheap marketing gimmick from a bank or car dealership, or a postal service error. We live in a world where a $1,000 dress and a $2 pair of used flip flops are delivered in the same boxes.

Manufacturers these days live in a world where their customer wants more for less, and they want it fast. They often have to make small or custom runs of products in a short amount of time. This is the cost of doing business today, but it can take a heavy toll on a manufacturer's packaging costs.

Void filler—we're not really fans of it. But we recognize that even the most sustainable packaging systems need at least a little bit of it. Sometimes we ship oddly-shaped objects that won't fit in a rectangular box. Sometimes we put multiple items in a box, inevitably leaving some empty space. Regardless, the goal should always be to use the smallest amount possible.
